The Black & White Building | London, UK
What does a truly sustainable 21st century building look like? This London building shows us that timber might be the answer! 🪵
Central London’s tallest mass timber office building, The Black & White Building, is a brand new cutting-edge  work space with over seven floors and includes a 60-person capacity roof terrace in addition to its 28 offices. Located at 74 Rivington Street, close to Shoreditch High Street Overground station, it was constructed with 37% less embodied carbon than comparable structures, and is also powered by 100% renewable energy sources. The building is linked to London’s creative community and has a close proximity to other surrounding work spaces, which are within walking distance.
By implementing passive design techniques, the Black & White Building generates its renewable energy from 80 solar panels installed on the roof. A central lightwell covers the length of the building, thus drawing in natural light to all floors, while the timber louvres that line the exterior help conserve energy and bring in heat 🌱
The interior design provides a space that showcases what is compelling about the exterior and manifests a harmonious working environment via exposed timber, mostly recycled materials along with a cozy colour palette that produces a calm atmosphere.
‘Putting up a timber construction is also about four to six months faster than conventional building methods,’ says Andrew Waugh, founder and director at Waugh Thistleton Architects. ‘What is important to us design-wise is that the building is a sophisticated kit of parts: you can take it apart if you wanted to’. The design team expects to achieve a BREEAM Outstanding rating for the project.
Kicking off 2023 with a positive example for the industry to follow! Great work to the #buildingheroes involved:
